Abstract

The article discusses the historical development of grades and departments in public schools of Memphis, Tennessee. Public education, which was first established in Memphis in 1848, were housed in rental buildings and could be described as sex-segregated and ungraded. Inadequate housing delayed the introduction of grades within the primary, intermediate, and secondary-school departments. The 7-4 system of grading the schools lasted until 1874 and the 8-4 system was set-up in 1905.
