Abstract

The article presents the program Peaceful Nuclear Explosions (PNE) of the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission. The project studies possible peaceful uses of nuclear explosions. Features of the nuclear explosives includes their high energy density and low cost when compared to chemical explosives. Disadvantages includes induced radioactivity, development of severe ground shock or seismic effects. Proposals for the utilization of nuclear explosions are enumerated. However, the Partial Test Ban Treaty of 1963 controlled the release of radioactivity by any nuclear explosion and Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty of 1968 restrained the acquisition of nuclear weapons. Results of the study on the application of peaceful nuclear explosions indicates that it will not have commercial utilization by 1990. INSET: The product has been oversold.
