Abstract

The article focuses on the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT) which refers to bilateral talks and corresponding international treaties between the Soviet Union and the U.S., the Cold War superpowers, on the issue of armament control. The objectives of SALT are: to stop the nuclear arms race, to begin nuclear disarmament, and to reduce the probability of the outbreak of nuclear war. The event produces agreements between the Cold War superpowers in which they are expected to limit the size of antiballistic missile systems, to limit the number of land-based intercontinental ballistic missiles and to limit the number of submarines carrying missiles with nuclear warheads.
