Abstract

The article presents a case study on how to solve a power system capacitor problem. The author discusses the case of a ski resort that ran into problems when it expanded its water pumping system to a 750-hp variable frequency drive. The problem was caused by high harmonic distortion and total demand distortion. The solution was to replace the harmonic filter/capacitor that would reduce the 5th harmonic current and stiffen the voltage by 5%.
