Abstract

The article explores the importance of guns and shooting in structuring the art of painter Charles Schreyvogel on a fundamental level. Although less celebrated than his contemporaries, Schreyvogel played a significant role in consolidating the image of the West as a theater of warfare between U.S. cavalry troopers and Native Americans. The guns in his paintings do more than reconstruct the history of conquest that Theodore Roosevelt famously called the winning of the West.
