Abstract

The article explores the extent to which the military can effect modernization among new nations, particularly in its political development. It is believed that military in new nations can intervene in domestic politics because they control the instruments of violence. It is also said that military have the maximum potential for involvement in domestic politics because its establishments are mainly infantry battalions which can be deployed in urban or rural areas. Examining the historical and economic factors which devised the military establishments is considered to be the initial step in an analysis of the military in political development.
