Abstract

This article focuses on symptomatic carotid artery stenosis. About 20-30% of patients with ischaemic stroke in the supply territory of the carotid artery experience significant atherosclerotic narrowing of the internal carotid artery. The European Carotid Surgery Trial and the North American Symptomatic Carotid Endarterectomy Trial have demonstrated that carotid endarterectomy reduces the risk of subsequent stroke in patients who have had a recent transient ischaemic attack.
