Abstract

The article reflects on the investigations conducted to study the effects of public school transportation on the school adjustment of urban elementary school students. It also presents the decision of the U.S. Supreme Court on the case of Swann and others versus Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education and others in which it endorsed the use of bussing to achieve racial balance in public schools. Results and proposals on the study were also provided. School adjustment was defined as an estimate of a student's adjustment to the school experience, consisting of the composite achievement test score, teacher grades, attendance, extra class activities, and peer acceptance.
