Abstract

The article discusses the future of U.S.-India relations which is likely to depend upon decisions made in the near term. It mentions the assessment made by both countries that India over the long term would become a major Asian power based on India's vast population, enormous economic potential and indigenous scientific and technological know-how. It notes that both also set up military steering committees to promote contacts between their defense forces and to carry out modest joint naval exercises in the early 1990s. The author believes that the future of such relations will remain clouded in the absence of a strategic vision that offers higher priority to the importance in global terms of the overall U.S.-India relationship.
