This article explores the interest in philanthropy among Asian families in 2006. This interest in philanthropy is a positive development. Ostensibly, the reason is obvious: most of Asia's wealthiest families have built their fortunes only in the past half-century. In Singapore, an event was conducted to discuss one of the fastest-growing economic activities in Asia: philanthropy. The Singapore government announced a series of measures to encourage philanthropy in its 2002 budget, doubling the level of tax relief on cash donations made to recognized charitable foundations and making them exempt from estate duty.
