Abstract

The article focuses on the open letter issued by Queen Elizabeth to the Lord Mayor in London, England ordering the deportation of blackamoors from the country. The critics have long used the letter as evidence of the extent to which racial prejudice pervaded the early modern English state. The letter also exposes political and economic factors that complicates and compromises those terms, making it clear that color-based discrimination is not only the primary concern.
