Abstract

The article discusses the rationale and program of the Science Curriculum Improvement Study in the University of California in Berkeley, California. The strategy of the study is to face the elementary school children with first-hand experience with intellectual challenges that will further cognitive development. It implies a commitment to work with a group of children for several years. The study hopes to illuminate on the acceptance by school system and their communities of an educational program designed to create inquisitiveness, mental flexibility, and intellectual independence.
