Abstract

The article features the effect of vat dyes on the rate of oxidation of cotton by hypochlorite solutions. The rate of oxidation of cotton cellulose by a dilute hypochlorite solution at a constant temperature is determined, not only by the concentration of the oxidant, but also by the following factors: the pH of the solution; the presence of substances that catalyse, or induce, the hypochlorite oxidation of cellulose; the illumination of the system; the presence of colored substances, particularly certain vat dyes that affect the rate of photochemical oxidation under constant conditions of illumination.
