Abstract

The article reports on the aluminum, ferrous scrap, paper and plastics, four major commodities, which has experienced modest to large annual gains in the market since 2000. Paper led in growth, experiencing annual increase as high as almost 15 percent in 2005. Ferrous scrap experienced second highest growth at nearly 13 percent. Since 2000, the increase in exports of the four major recyclables commodities has been staggering, which ferrous scrap exports climbed 125 percent over the six-year period, followed by aluminum at 89 percent. Undeniably, the largest non-North American consumer of US exports is China, which become a contender for securing resources of both virgin and recovered materials.
