Abstract

This article discusses the discovery of a fossilized fish that may be a missing link in the evolutionary chain. This fossil, discovered at Ellesmere Island in Canada, displays features that are common to both fish and mammals. The creature had gills, but also an interlocking ribcage, suggesting lungs and the beginnings of a tetrapod hand in its pectoral fins. Researchers believe that this specimen is a direct ancestor of the first tetrapods that crawled out of the water onto land.
