Abstract

This article discusses the structure of cotton fibers. It is noted that the length of the cotton fiber, its fineness, its convolutions, the shape of its cross-section, the thickness, and fibrillar construction of its walls are all details of the morphology of the fiber. The real existence of a molecular structure is imposed by a study of the chemical behavior of fibers. Between the morphological and the molecular, a third structure is recognized in which a patter is produced by a certain orderliness in the arrangement of neighboring macromolecules.
