Abstract

The softness of loose wool is heavily dependent on diameter, both within and between breeds. Crimp characteristics also play a significant but minor role. Bulk compressibility is a highly important factor, and it may well be that the effect of various crimp parameters on softness is due to their influence on bulk compressibility rather than to any directly appreciated tactile effect.
