Abstract

The article examines the effect of opiate addiction on longevity. A social experiment in New Haven, Connecticut for a study on the effect of opium was analyzed. The experiment was the establishment of a clinic in City Hall where registered addicts could buy a daily dose of morphine at the nominal cost of four cents per grain. David F. Musto and Manuel R. Ramos of Yale University have compiled an account of the clinic's 25 months of operation. They conclude that opiate addiction was one of many hazards to health associated with low socioeconomic status.
