Abstract

The article presents information on two Indian engineers, Shambhu Upadhyaya and Kaliappa Ravindran, who have made their mark internationally in the field of computer science and software engineering. Upadhyaya and Ravindran became friends while studying at the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore, India. After receiving their bachelor's and master's degrees, both became colleagues at Bangalore based the Indian Space Research Organization. To pursue Ph.D. degrees, they went their separate ways. Ravindran went to the University of British Columbia in Canada, where became a faculty member of the City College of the City University of New York in New York City. Upadhyaya went to the University of Newcastle in Australia and joined the faculty of the University of Buffalo. Both ended up in New York. They remained out of touch for more than 20 years when Kevin Kwiat of the Air Force Research Laboratory's Information Directorate presented papers at two different symposia, and met both of them individually. He invited them to the Air Force Office of Scientific Research Summer Faculty Fellowship Program, where they both met after a long time. With their famous research works publishing widely, students follow their initial research and succeed.
