Abstract

The article evaluates the two major causes for the disappearance of the teaching of public virtue and the civic arts from most college and university campuses in the U.S. One is the overwhelming influence of the ethos of the research university on the thinking and teaching of college and university faculties across the country. The other is the virtually unconscious acceptance by academics of the ideology of liberal individualism, along with the uncritical acceptance of the organization and operation of institutions of higher education as autonomous corporations, modeled on the modern business corporation.
