Abstract

The article reports on the needs of teachers to pursue the science education curriculum in preparation to become junior college science teachers in the U.S. However, a number of educators do not believe that one trained in science education should function as a college teacher of science. The junior college science teacher needs a comprehensive knowledge of the whole field of science and a penetrating knowledge of the individual subjects. The fact that college teachers usually lack a sufficiently broad background gives rise to one of the prime weaknesses of higher education, fragmentation and overspecialization of the curriculum.
