Abstract
- The article reports on fatality and injury statistics for the waste industry in the U.S. In 2004, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported solid waste fatalities, including death in sold waste collection. There was a decrease in injury rate in waste treatment and disposal in 2004. Between 1998 and 2002, there was a decrease in the injury and illness rate for solid waste companies. The BLS fatality and injury rate statistics shows that the industry is making its progress in reducing workplace accidents. However, the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration issued more safety citations to solid waste companies in 2005 than in 2004. INSET: AVOIDING PITFALLS.
