Abstract

The article focuses on the physiological football, a drill-type physiology lesson in secondary education. The basic idea of the game is to adapt the usual scrimmage diagram as featured by football coaches to the teaching of the digestive system. The scrimmage line-up is diagrammed on the board and copied on suitable paper by each student. Variations may be introduced, after the class has become familiar with the use of the diagrams to represent enzyme action. The method of conducting a drill exercise assesses that it is not as successful with girls as with boys, it may be permitted to consume too much time, and it requires a teacher who knows the essentials of football.
