Abstract

The article reports that the South African government has plans to regulate the minibus taxi industry. The government intends to provide a scrapping allowance for the existing minibus taxis as well as 18 new vehicles. This is a devise to reduce the number of taxis that has caused clashes between rival taxi associations. Despite objections from taxi associations, the government is convinced that the new system will provide better service especially in providing adequate commuter transport in preparation for the 2010 soccer world cup.
