Abstract

Excited states in <superscript>175</superscript>Yb, <superscript>176</superscript>Yb and <superscript>177</superscript>Yb were populated via the bombardment of a <superscript>176</superscript>Yb target with a 750 MeV <superscript>136</superscript>Xe beam. Gamma-ray decays from these states were measured with the AFRODITE multi-detector spectrometer. The rotational band previously assigned to the ground state of <superscript>177</superscript>Yb has been reassigned to the first-excited state of <superscript>175</superscript>Yb. A new rotational band based on the ground state of <superscript>177</superscript>Yb is presented, and the band based on the K <superscript>π</superscript> = 4<superscript>-</superscript> two-quasiparticle state in <superscript>176</superscript>Yb has been identified. Also a candidate for the rotational band based on the K <superscript>π</superscript> = 8<superscript>-</superscript>, T <subscript>1/2</subscript> = 11.4(3) s two-quasiparticle state in <superscript>176</superscript>Yb has been found. Comparisons of g<subscript>K</subscript> values derived from in-band branching ratios are consistent with the ν9/2<superscript>+</superscript>[624] assignment to the ground state of <superscript>177</superscript>Yb, the ν<superscript>2</superscript>{9/2<superscript>+</superscript>[624] ⊗ 1/2<superscript>-</superscript>[510]} assignment to the K <superscript>π</superscript> = 4<superscript>-</superscript> state and with the ν<superscript>2</superscript>{9/2<superscript>+</superscript>[624] ⊗ 7/2<superscript>-</superscript>[514]} assignment to the K <superscript>π</superscript> = 8<superscript>-</superscript> metastable excited state in <superscript>176</superscript>Yb.
