Abstract

The article presents information on various types of electrical energy storage systems. Pumped hydropower is the most prevalent form of energy storage on power systems, but pressure to increase the proportion of renewable generation in power generation is leading to an opening of the market for other forms of electricity storage to be used. Superconducting magnetic energy storage devices use the property of a superconducting material to support a moving current indefinitely as there are no resistive losses. Consideration of wind power, solar power, small run-of-the-river hydropower, tidal and wave power generation suggests that in many applications, energy storage would be useful and a viable technology.
