Abstract

The article describes a science project that requires students to create outdoor scrolls on which they are able to record their observations of the natural world. The project offers students a way to develop their observation, inquiry, and documentary skills. They also learn the importance of artistic layout in relation to the organization of space on the scroll timeline. Science topics that lend themselves well to the scroll project are seasonal changes, the Wisconsin Fast Plant life cycle, the metamorphosis of monarch butterflies, tides and shorelines, and migration patterns.
