Abstract

The article reports on the plan of James E. Olson, chairman and CEO of American Telephone & Telegraph Co., to lay off 330,000 employees to boost the company's unimproved $35 billion profits. The company had intensified its cost cutting by laying off employees and selling assets to elevate its earnings from 1985 to 1986. It also reduced the impact of layoffs by annual attrition and placing excess workers to other division within the company.
