Abstract

This article offers a guide to safe encounters with black widow spiders in southeastern U.S. The male is shy and rarely seen by humans, and although the female does attack the male after he has fulfilled his reproductive duties, this does not happen in every case. Females are generally not aggressive unless they perceive a threat or are guarding an egg sac. The black widow spider consumes not only insects, centipedes, and other small vertebrates, but also those that are proportionately much larger, such as giant cockroaches and small gecko lizards.
