Abstract

This article discusses the emphasis on female uses of phonographs in the film Little Voice. Focusing on phonograph technology rather than record collecting, Holly Kruse finds that early 20th-century audio technology is initially marketed to women. However, when the gramophone is marketed to women, it is sold primarily as an educational tool for children and as a decorative item for the home.
