Abstract

This article focuses on the relationship between civilians and the military. Civil-military relations have many dimensions and can be viewed from different perspectives. Those dimensions include relationships in the spheres of power and politics, economics and media, science and technology, culture and history. For an appropriate understanding of the evolution of civil-military relations through the centuries, one has to scrutinize the records of history, the ideas of philosophers, insights of poets, and folk wisdom. Only in the twentieth century did political scientists, sociologists, psychologists, and economists attempt to study the relationship between the military and society with the theoretical and empirical tools of social science.
