Abstract

During her artistic career, Edith Piaf recorded over three hundred songs. Throughout her life, she sang about love and misfortune. In her rich repertoire, composed of realistic, popular, and poetic songs, she tells stories in which characters are often mentioned by their first or last names, thus not remaining anonymous. The use of proper names in Edith Piaf 's song lyrics is a common stylistic feature. The settings of these stories can also be identified. The events in Piaf 's songs usually take place in specific locations, which makes them even more authentic and dramatic. In this article, I present the results of onomastic research based on an analysis of all the proper names appearing in Edith Piaf 's song lyrics and examine their functions. The article also includes suggestions for pedagogical use of proper names in French as a foreign language lessons. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
