Abstract

A recent study conducted by researchers at the University Peruana Cayetano Heredia in Lima, Peru, compared newly developed SNP barcode panels with microsatellites to explore the population genetics of malaria parasites in the Peruvian Amazon. The study analyzed samples from different areas in the Loreto region and found that the SNP barcodes provided comparable results to microsatellites in investigating the population genetics of Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium falciparum parasites. The researchers concluded that the choice between the two methods should be guided by research objectives, costs, and resource availability. [Extracted from the article]
