Abstract

The article discusses the implications of the fall of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Islamist movements worldwide, particularly the Taliban in Afghanistan. The rise of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) in Syria poses a challenge to the Taliban's hardline rule, as HTS promises inclusivity, tolerance of minorities, and democratic reform. The Taliban's authoritarian policies, such as banning women's education and restricting NGOs, have led to growing dissent within the group, with moderate officials criticizing their leader's hardline stance. The success of HTS in Syria may inspire opposition forces in Afghanistan and further isolate the Taliban on the global stage. [Extracted from the article]
