Abstract

The article presents information on the consumer price index for all urban consumers (CPI-U) for July 2005. On a seasonally adjusted basis, the CPI-U, which was unchanged in June 2005, increased 0.5 percent in July 2005. Energy costs advanced sharply, increasing 3.8 percent in July 2005 after falling 0.5 percent in June 2005. Within energy, the index for petroleum-based energy rose 6.1 percent in July 2005, accounting for over one-half of the increase in the overall consumer price index. Energy services increased 1.1 percent. The index for food increased 0.2 percent in July 2005. The index for fruits and vegetables, which fell 1.2 percent in June 2005, increased 1.6 percent in July 2005. The index for all items less food and energy increased 0.1 percent for the third consecutive month.
