Abstract

A recent study from Virginia Commonwealth University discusses the use of a machine learning algorithm to avoid unnecessary paracentesis for the exclusion of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) in cirrhosis patients in resource-limited settings. The algorithm, trained on patient data from 2009 to 2019, showed high negative predictive values for SBP in different cohorts, suggesting its potential to streamline the burden of timely paracentesis. The research concludes that applying this model could help in excluding patients unlikely to have SBP, thus reducing the need for paracentesis in resource-limited settings.
