Abstract
- Researchers at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City conducted a study comparing the outcomes of two surgical treatments, Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP) and robot-assisted simple prostatectomy (RASP), for medication-refractory benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in patients with prostate volume >= 80 g. The study found that HoLEP and RASP had comparable efficacy in achieving the trifecta outcome of complete urinary continence, Q(max) >15 mL/second, and no postoperative complications at 3 months. HoLEP was preferred for BPH in large prostates due to its shorter hospital stay and catheterization time. Further randomized controlled trials are needed to establish treatment protocols for patients with medication-refractory BPH. [Extracted from the article]
