Abstract

Researchers from the University of Pittsburgh conducted a systematic review on the costs of drug-associated acute kidney injury (D-AKI) and potential cost savings with nephrotoxin stewardship strategies. The study found that the economic burden of D-AKI is significant, with total admission costs ranging from $47,696 to $173,569 for patients who developed D-AKI. Implementing nephrotoxin stewardship programs, such as substituting less nephrotoxic drugs or using therapeutic drug monitoring, can lead to total medical cost savings ranging from $5,171 to $364,973. The research emphasizes the importance of adopting efficient nephrotoxin stewardship programs to optimize patient care and reduce costs. [Extracted from the article]
