Abstract

This article presents an overview of the agenda of the International Association for Research in Income and Wealth's Twenty-Ninth General Conference in Joensuu, Finland, August 20-26, 2006. The session will include papers concerning measurement of wealth from both a micro and a macro point of view, methodological issues concerning micro and macro estimates, the relationship between micro and macro estimates as well as comparative studies on portfolio composition and the distribution of wealth. By 2006, member states of the European Union will be required to measure many parts of government output in volume terms directly. This session will discuss the state of the art in the measurement of government output and productivity following these developments and discuss how the views of producers of economic statistics and the needs of policy makers can be reconciled. Poverty and low income among children is a policy concern of increasing resonance in many rich and developing countries. The objective of this session is to highlight new developments in the measurement of child poverty, offer comparisons in levels and changes of child poverty rates across rich and developing countries, and relate poverty and low income to the well being of children as well as their capacity to become successful adults.
