Abstract

Assisted reproductive technology (ART) is a widely used intervention in reproductive medicine, accounting for 2% to 8% of births in various countries. While most babies born through ART are healthy, there are risks such as maternal morbidity, preterm birth, and low birth weight. Studies suggest that birth defects, particularly heart defects, may also be more common in ART-conceived pregnancies. Research has consistently linked ART with heart defects, and a recent study by Sargisian et al. found that ART was associated with a 30% increased risk of major heart defects compared to spontaneous conception. The study also highlighted potential biases that may impact the observed associations between ART and heart defects, emphasizing the need for further research to determine the direct effects of ART on heart defects.
