Abstract

The editorial discusses the health impacts of ultrafine particles (UFPs) smaller than 2.5 μm, primarily from combustion sources like roadway traffic. Studies show UFP exposure is linked to respiratory-related deaths, with long-term exposure potentially causing 1,100 nonaccidental deaths per year in Montreal and Toronto. While UFP monitoring is lacking, research indicates UFPs have adverse health effects, emphasizing the need for more human population data and regulatory action to address this pollutant. The study highlights the importance of establishing UFP monitoring networks to better understand population exposures and facilitate essential epidemiological research. [Extracted from the article]
