Abstract

Emulsifiers are essential for cosmetic products: They facilitate the incorporation of both hydrophilic (water-soluble) and lipophilic (oil-soluble) components into a formulation, support the formation and stability of emulsions and are also used to influence their consistency and texture. High performance, primarily petrochemical-derived ethylene oxide (EO)-based emulsifiers, have long been used, but in recent years, the growing trend towards natural cosmetics has driven demand for emulsifiers that meet sustainability claims. Formulators are thereby faced with the challenge of using sustainable ingredients without compromising on performance. Polyglyceryl-based emulsifiers derived from 100% renewable feedstocks and manufactured in accordance with green chemistry principles, have the capability of catering to these demands. Various studies with formulations highlighting two different natural-based polyglyceryl-based emulsifiers showed that it is possible to develop formulations with a performance comparable to that of formulations containing the high performing petrochemical-based ethoxylate emulsifiers. The results demonstrate that the new emulsifiers can help formulators to further expand their natural-based cosmetics product range and support the industry's shift towards more eco-friendly solutions.
