Abstract

The article focuses on the performance of business enterprises in the U.S. semiconductor industry in light of rumors that they are facing competition from the Japanese semiconductor industry. In 1984, U.S. chipmakers accounted for over half the world's $6 billion chip making equipment market, while Japan accounted for 41 percent. The fact that there are few economies of scale in chip making equipment helps U.S. producers. U.S. chip equipment makers clearly understand that hammering away at the Japanese market is critical.
