Abstract

A recent study conducted at the University of Iowa compared the impact of spinal anesthesia versus general anesthesia on the variability of surgical times. The research found that spinal anesthesia was associated with slightly smaller standard deviations in surgical times compared to general anesthesia. However, the study concluded that the choice of anesthesia had minimal direct economic effects on surgical times and workflow. The findings suggest that while anesthetic choice may have biological implications, its influence on operating theatre productivity through changes in surgical times is limited.
