The article uses a descriptive-heuristic method. The author undertook a task of describing the nature of media linguistics as a subdiscipline of linguistics, as seen from her own perspective, as well as in the light of views of a number of other linguists. The discussion about the methodology of media linguistics presented in the paper comprises arguments in favour of distinguishing it from other subdisciplines on the basis of research methods, research objects, and objects of analysis. The author argues that the strongest evidence for the distinctness of media linguistics is media discourses and not the media themselves, as well as the multimodality of media texts.
