Abstract

A study conducted at Reykjavik University in Iceland found that verbal memory in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is linked to average oxygen saturation during sleep, rather than traditional OSA diagnostic parameters like the apnea-hypopnea index. The research suggests that average oxygen saturation during sleep may be a stronger predictor of cognitive decline in OSA patients. The study also highlights the importance of considering age when selecting neurocognitive tests and including tests that cover all cognitive domains due to the diffuse cognitive effects of OSA.
