Abstract

The tensile properties of polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-based and pitch-based single carbon fibers were assessed using Raman scattering. Parameters and ratios related to Raman scattering and stress measurement for the G- and D-bands were analyzed. These include the peak values of Raman shifts (R<subscript>G</subscript>, R<subscript>D</subscript>), full width at half maximum (FWHM<subscript>G</subscript>, FWHM<subscript>D</subscript>), peak value slopes (|A<subscript>G</subscript>|, |A<subscript>D</subscript>|), peak value intercepts (B<subscript>G</subscript>, B<subscript>D</subscript>), the intensity ratio (I<subscript>D</subscript>/I<subscript>G</subscript>), the peak value ratio (R<subscript>D</subscript>/R<subscript>G</subscript>), the full width at half maximum ratio (FWHM<subscript>D</subscript>/FWHM<subscript>G</subscript>), the slope ratio (A<subscript>D</subscript>/A<subscript>G</subscript>), and the intercept ratio (B<subscript>D</subscript>/B<subscript>G</subscript>). These parameters and ratios were determined by analyzing the PAN-based and pitch-based carbon fibers and were correlated to the tensile modulus (E), interlayer spacing (d<subscript>002</subscript>), lattice spacing (d<subscript>10</subscript>), and crystalline size (L<subscript>c</subscript> and L<subscript>a</subscript>). In addition, a linear relationship was identified between the Raman scattering, stress measurement parameters, ratios and E, d<subscript>002</subscript>, d<subscript>10</subscript>, as well as between the Raman scattering, stress measurement parameters, ratios and L<subscript>a</subscript> and L<subscript>C</subscript> on the log–log scale.
