Abstract
- The article discusses the case of a 6-year-old male with invasive pneumococcal disease-associated acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) who was treated with extracorporeal cytokine removal. The patient received continuous renal replacement therapy with hemoadsorption, resulting in a reduction of pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines and improvement in clinical outcomes. The study suggests that early extracorporeal cytokine removal may benefit children with severe ARDS, and real-time monitoring of cytokine profiles could aid in clinical decision-making. The research was supported by funding from Chong Lap (Hong Kong) Company Limited and the UGC-Research Matching Grant Scheme, with no conflicts of interest declared by the authors.
