Abstract

The Department of Education offers relief to student loan borrowers through borrower defense to repayment in cases of college misconduct. As of April 30, 2024, $17.2 billion in federal student loans were discharged for nearly a million borrowers. Relief is determined through individual adjudication or group discharges, with seven colleges receiving full relief for all affected borrowers. Education has updated its process to prioritize full relief, considering evidence provided by colleges and implementing a group discharge process for widespread misconduct cases, including oversight by a quality control team. The Sweet settlement agreement has also impacted the borrower defense process, providing automatic relief or a streamlined review process for class members. [Extracted from the article]
