Abstract

The University of Liege conducted research on the preparation of active films with antioxidant and antimicrobial properties by combining ginger essential oil nanoemulsion with xylan and polyvinyl alcohol. The nanoemulsions, produced via ultrasound, showed stability and compatibility with the film matrix. The composite films exhibited enhanced UV shielding, mechanical characteristics, water barrier performance, antioxidant activity, and antimicrobial properties, making them promising for applications in active food packaging. The research was peer-reviewed and conducted by Marie-Laure Fauconnier, Junhan Liu, Aurore Richel, and Yuhong Jin at the Laboratory of Chemistry of Natural Molecules, Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech, University of Liege in Belgium.
